Everything has a beginning

As mentioned in my first page, one of the reasons for starting this blog was due to the horse meat scandal.  A simple Google search will bring up pages of reports of horse meat in 100% beef burgers, meatballs, other ready meals etc.

There are a couple of issues around this:
Mainly that it is illegal to label something 100% when it isn’t.
Secondly there is a question around how the animal may have been slaughtered – was it stunned then throat slit or euthanised with something not fit for human consumption?

Personally I wouldn’t have an issue eating horse, but I can see that the points above are problematic.  However, the real issue is do you get what you pay for?  I won’t preach on about it on this page – but I am sure I will get on my high horse (pun intended) about it in posts to come.

I won’t be saying “everyone must stop shopping at supermarkets and support their local shops” because:
a)   – not everyone has the luxury of having choice of local over super; and
b)   – If we all stopped using supermarkets long term unemployment will rise dramatically.

Supermarkets provide a great services and I believe there is room in this world for local and supermarket a like.  Just as I believe there is room for take aways and home cooking too.

But I will be saying – take time to think about what you are doing about the time you spend preparing your meals.  Put love into cooking your food, the more you will love the food you eat.

Easy for me to say?  Well yes it is, I am one part of a DINKY (double income no kids) relationship with enough disposable income.  I am not rich, but I am for the most part comfortable, until about a week and half to pay day ;)

I don’t have the distraction of kids at the weekend, but I can be just as “ugh… I really don’t want to move from the sofa today”.  Something that stops the budding cook in their tracks, although it can get a little boring watching endless repeats of NCIS (especially as it would seem they only have a few episodes on one tape).

I am very lucky to live in an area of London that has a weekly farmers market, greengrocer, butcher and a fishmonger; as well as a large supermarket very close by.

I do understand that a lot of people don’t have this much access, and in some cases the money either (although I will show that shopping at a markets isn’t any more expensive than supermarket), but that doesn’t mean you can’t care about food.  It doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of what you do have.

Years ago I had a fractured relationship with food, preferring to eat tubs of ice cream, the occasional frankfurter and tons of toast with coffee than cook from srcatch.  Living alone own does not inspire you to cook much, it’s expensive and only you to appreciate the effort put in.  But if you flip that on its head, you could become a great and savvy cook.  You can hone skills, test taste combinations and experiment with different cuts of meat or veg you have never heard of let alone eaten.  And let’s face it, if it all goes wrong no one else will ever know!  So you can have the confidence to cook for others, and not just a significant other but friends, family, work colleagues.

I hope you will follow this blog and enjoy it (as mentioned in my first post).  I am a researcher by trade and will use those skills to feed this blog, so you may occasionally read something that isn’t a straight comparison of shop bought vrs homemade.  Things such as, how to create a good menu, seasonality of food and the joys (or not) of breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Now how to sign off?

Om-nom-nom for now?

Eat well and prosper?
